Hilda McMartin MacDermid
Hilda McMartin MacDermid of The Hartford Home,
Morrisburg, died on Sun., June 16, 2002 at the Winchester District
Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 94.
She was born on June 5, 1908 in Elma to the late Andrew and Annabel
Barkley (nee Hodgson). She was the beloved wife of the late Donald
McMartin and the late Callum MacDermid.
She was the loving mother of Gwen (Bob) Scott of Nepean and Neil
(Donna) McMartin of Chesterville. She is survived by a twin sister,
Helen Smith of Winchester, and predeceased by brothers Reginald
and Egerton Barkley.
She was the loving grandma of Wendy (Bruce) Hamm, Judy (Steve)
Greiner, Lisa McMartin and Tracy McMartin, all of Ottawa. She
was the little grandma of Sarah, Chelsea and Jack. Also survived
by several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. McMartin MacDermid was born and raised in Elma, and she lived
there until she married Mr. McMartin in 1931 and moved to Spruce
Grove, where her new husband operated a saw mill. She lived in
Spruce Grove for 17 years, before moving to 14 Fifth St. West,
Cornwall, where she lived from 1948-1996. In 1996 she moved to
The Hartford Home, where she has resided for the past six years.
Mrs. McMartin MacDermid was a devoted supporter of St. Paul's
United Church, Cornwall, and was a member of the United Church
Women.
Her passions were her children, grandchildren and many friends.
She loved music, especially playing the piano, and she rarely
missed watching her all-time favorite TV show, which was Lawrence
Welk, on Saturday nights.
She enjoyed frequent quilting bees with her friends in the UCW
and summer camping with her family at Silver Lake. In later years,
she enjoyed camping at Riverside Heights with her twin sister
Helen and nephews Ralph and Gordon and their families.
Over her 94 years she was a valued friend to many and she will
be sadly missed by all.
Donations to the Winchester District Memorial Hospital building
fund would be appreciated by the family.
Funeral service was held at Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home,
Winchester on Thurs., June 20 with Rev. Doug Carnegie officiating.
Interment at Maple Ridge Cemetery, Chesterville.
Pallbearers were Gordon Smith, Ralph Smith, Robert Barkley, Brian
Barkley, Malcolm McMartin and Don Henry.
