Mae Alma Meikle

On Dec. 5, 2002, Mae Alma Meikle in her 94th year passed away peacefully at the Belleville General Hospital. She was born in Aultsville and resided in Morrisburg until she moved to Bridge Street Retirement Residence, Belleville in 1999.
She was the dear wife of Harry William Meikle of Morrisburg, who predeceased her in 1988. She was the dear mother of Marilyn Hunt (Joe) of Gaithersburg, Maryland and Elizabeth McDonald (John) of Belleville.
She was Nana to Ian McDonald (Tanya) of Burnaby, B.C.; Heather Cavanagh (Paul) of Etobicoke; and Glen McDonald (Roz) of Manotick. She was great-grandmother of Isabelle Cavanagh, Etobicoke.
She was predeceased by her parents, Albert Edwin Hollister and Carrie Ethel Dafoe of Aultsville; and by sister Thelma Ault and brother Clifford Hollister. She was predeceased by sister-in-law Mildred Shannette and her husband Dr. A.T. Shannette; nephew Richard Shannette; and sister-in-law Jean G. Meikle.
She married Harry William Meikle on Feb. 1, 1933 at the United Church Manse in Cornwall. They were members of Lakeshore Drive United Church in Morrisburg. When Upper Canada Village was developed, she worked there as a guide for several years. She enjoyed her family, her many friends and her gardening and flowers. The river was an important part of her life, particularly in the summer months at the family cottage east of town beyond Nash's Creek. She enjoyed travelling in Canada, Europe and the United States. For many years, she and her husband Harry spent the winter months in Florida.
She was also an avid sports person and member of the Morrisburg Curling Club and the Morrisburg Golf Club. She served as president of the women's curling division in 1954 and on many committees over the years. She curled competitively and was well known in the Ottawa and Montreal areas in the 1940s and 1950s.
In 1932, she and her husband were involved with the first Morrisburg golf group. They played golf on Meikle property north of the old CNR tracks, which is the present Highway 2. In 1939 they moved to a site near Rosedale Inn on the St. Lawrence, which was developed into the present golf course.
The funeral service was at the Parker Funeral Home on Dec. 9. Rev. Jean Udall of Lakeshore Drive United Church conducted the service, along with family friend Rev. Malcolm Stienburg. Interment was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Morrisburg.
Honorary pallbearers were Arthur Edgerton, Dr. Wayne Domanko, Douglas Grenkie, Fred Hill, Gerald Mullins, Hill Steinburg and Dr. Traer VanAllen. Pallbearers were Heather and Paul Cavanagh, Glen and Roz McDonald, Jamie Jones and Lindsay Weegar. Memorial contributions may be made to CNIB or Winchester District Memorial Hospital.
