Bill Sheldrick

Bill Sheldrick of Morrisburg died on Dec. 7, 2002 at Winchester District Memorial Hospital after a one-year battle with cancer. He was 72.
He is survived by wife Joan Sheldrick (nee Smith) whom he married in the Knox Presbyterian Church manse in Morrisburg on July 1, 1954.
He was born in Gananoque on Feb. 9, 1930 to the late Irvine Sheldrick and Dorothy (nee Larmour).
He was a construction supervisor with Ontario Hydro for 42 years before retiring in 1991. He supervised the upgrading and construction of electrical distribution and transformer stations throughout Ontario. He was also involved in the safety operations of Ontario Hydro's nuclear power generating stations.
He touched the lives of his colleagues not only in the working environment but also on a personal and family level. He was able to extend a helping hand with employment opportunities to fellow community members, most of whom are still Hydro One employees today. He worked as a construction consultant to Ontario Hydro for several years after his retirement.
He lived at his home in Morrisburg for the previous 43 years. He was a member of Excelsior Masonic Lodge #142, and Knox Presbyterian Church where he served as caretaker for over 30 years and he also served as an elder of the church.
He is survived by children Judy Sheldrick of Russell, Cindy (Rick) Froats of Morrisburg, Bill Jr. of Cornwall and Paul of Morrisburg. He is survived by brothers and sisters Hilda Meek of Battersea, Russell (Theresa) of St. Catharines and David (Nancy) of Ottawa. He was predeceased by sister Jean Sheldrick.
He will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Katrina, Kimberly, William, Bryan and Clayton. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
He became actively involved in Scouting approximately 30 years ago when he became troop leader for his community. He served as assistant district commissioner for many years and he also served as president of the St. Lawrence District. With the assistance of several community individuals and organizations including local Lions Clubs and Legions, he developed a youth camp (Camp Sheldrick) on Nesbitt Road south of Winchester. He also organized an international Scouting movement with troops from Pennsylvania which continues as an annual exchange of friendship and camaraderie. No matter what task needed to be done, there was no task too big or small for Bill to handle. He was a kind, compassionate and caring individual and he will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing this inspiring man.
Friends called at Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home on Dec. 9. A Masonic Lodge Service was held on Dec. 10. The funeral was at Knox Presbyterian Church in Morrisburg, officiated by Rev. Darren May. Interment was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Morrisburg.
Pallbearers were Rick Froats, Hartley Hodgson, Steve Coligan, Frank Albert, Donnie Lewis and Graham Houze. Honorary pallbearers were Sid Drenna, Lee Ouderkirk, Gerry Robinson and Stan Mabo.
