Muriel York
Muriel York died on Nov. 1, 2002 at Winchester
District Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 85.
She was born on April 17, 1917 in Edwardsburgh Township to William
Burnside and the former Mary King. She attended Glen Smail and
Spencerville Continuation Schools. On April 18, 1936 she married
James York and then moved to Shanly where they farmed until retirement.
After her husband's death in 1992, she remained in Shanly, living
there 66 years.
She was a life member of the Shanly UCW and enjoyed attending
church functions in her community and surrounding areas. She was
also an avid euchre player. Her greatest hobbies were making bread
and rolls to share with family, friends and neighbors, also hooking
rugs of which she completed over 50.
Mrs. York is survived by her daughters Mary Simzer of Brockville,
Connie Cinnamon (Barry) of Winchester and son George of Shanly.
She is also survived by grandchildren Jamey Simzer (Andrea) of
Whitby; Judy Simzer-Skeggs (Ron) of Kingston; Nathan, Dave, and
Denny Cinnamon of Winchester; Lois York of Winchester Springs;
Jimmie York of Spencerville; and six great-grandchildren. She
is also survived by her brother Gerald Burnside of Johnstown,
and sister-in-law Reta Burnside of Spencerville. She was predeceased
by sister Elsie Merkley; brothers Howard, Carl and Russell; and
son-in-law Lyal Simzer.
Visitation for Mrs. York was held at Grant Brown Funeral Home
Purcell Chapel, Spencerville, on Nov. 24. Funeral service was
held in the chapel of the funeral home on Nov. 25, officiated
by Rev. Patricia Swan. Muriel Irving was the organist for the
service. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
Pallbearers were grandsons Jamey Simzer, Jimmie York, Nathan,
Dave and Denny Cinnamon and great-grandson Joey Skeggs.
Memorial donations to Winchester District Memorial Hospital would
be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
