Otto Berends
Otto Berends of RR 2 Mountain passed away on June 1, 2003 at Kemptville
District Hospital after and two-and-a-half-year battle with ALS.
He was 73 years old.
He was born on Feb. 17, 1930 in Lienden, Holland, the son of Benardus
Antonie Berends and Klara Willemina Berends (nee van Tuil). He
lived in Holland for 21 years. He married Audrey Hoogenboom on
Aug. 20, 1951 in Cardinal. They had lived in Mountain for 47 years.
Among his many interests, he loved to travel, play cards with
his friends and sing at church. He was a truck driver for six
years and he spent 43 years dairy farming.
He is survived by his wife Audrey; and sons Ben (Anja) of Mountain,
Jack (Charlene) of Osgoode, Carl (Mary) of Osgoode and daughter
Wilma (Mike) Hiemstra of Russell. He was dear Opa of Teresa (Jim),
Jason, Amy, Cara, Mike, Ryan, Karen, Brad, Curtis, Matthew, Justin
and Alex. He will be fondly remembered by brother Ruth Berends,
and sister Klaar Van Ommeren Berends, both of Holland. He was
predeceased by his brother Jan Berends of Holland.
Visitation was held at the Grant Brown Funeral Home Rolston Chapel
in Kemptville on June 2, 2003. Funeral service was held on June
3 at the Christian Reformed Church, Kemptville, officiated by
Pastor Ben Ponsen.
Interment followed at Reids Mills Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons
Jason, Mike, Ryan and Brad Berends; and Albert Koekkoek and Harry
Harbers. Honorary pallbearers were John Vanderlee and Bert de
Haan. Memorial donations may be made to ALS Society or the Kemptville
District Hospital Foundation.
