Hilda Gwennie Conlin
Hilda Gwennie Conlin of Cardinal
died peacefully on June 6, 2003 after being in Winchester District
Memorial Hospital for six weeks. She was 88.
She was born in Mountain on July 3, 1914 to the late Mary (nee
Shippe) and William Brooks.
She married the late George R. Conlin on May 8, 1937 at her parents'
home in Hallville.
She will be remembered by children Larry (Doreen) of Cardinal,
and Steve (Marjorie) of Cardinal. She was sister of Elsie Simpson
and sister-in-law of Ruth and Marie Brooks.
Mrs. Conlin was predeceased by son Peter (Beth) of Prescott, sister
May Cameron and by brothers Bert and Charlie Brooks.
Granddaughter Lou Anne Hamilton gave a wonderful eulogy at the
funeral service. Granddaughter Mary Sabourin played the organ
at the funeral and sang a solo at the cemetery.
Mrs. Conlin and her husband operated restaurants in Winchester,
Iroquois and Cardinal during their first years of marriage. They
moved to Pittston in 1942, where they farmed for 34 years. She
was a homemaker. In their later years, they made their home in
Cardinal and enjoyed spending their winters in Flagler Beach,
Florida.
She enjoyed being with her family, travelling and yard sales.
She was a member of St. John's United Church in Cardinal. Her
last residence was the Hartford Retirement Home in Morrisburg
where she lived for seven months.
She was the loving grandmother of Lou Anne and Robert Hamilton;
Mary and Mitch Sabourin; and George, David, Greg and Mike Conlin.
She was the proud great-grandmother of Nathan, Megan and Matthew
Hamilton; and Ian and Jenna Sabourin.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Cardinal
on June 8. The funeral took place at the funeral home on June
9, officiated by Rev. Arlyce Schiebout and Rev. Patricia Swann.
Interment was at South Gower Cemetery.
The pallbearers were grandsons George, David, Greg and Mike Conlin;
Robert Hamilton; and Mitch Sabourin. Honorary pallbearers were
great-grandsons Nathan Hamilton and Ian Sabourin.
