Helen Irene Smith
Helen Irene Smith, a resident of
Dundas Manor in Winchester, died at Winchester District Memorial
Hospital on March 12, 2003. She was 94.
She was born in Williamsburg Township on June 5, 1908 to Andrew
Barkley and Annabel (nee Hudson). She married the late Harold
C. Smith on Sept. 2, 1939 in Ottawa.
Mrs. Smith taught school for over 35 years. She began teaching
at Maple Ridge Public School. She eventually taught at several
local schools including Forward Road Public School, Boucks Hill
Public School, Dunbar Public School and Williamsburg Public School.
The last 15 years of her career were spent at City View Public
School in Ottawa.
She was educated in Williamsburg Township and lived there until
the late 1950s when the family moved to Ottawa. She lived in Ottawa
until 1985 when she moved to the Park Drive Villa in Williamsburg.
She lived primarily in the Williamsburg area since that time.
She was a member of the United Church of Canada and the Women's
Institute.
She will be remembered by children Gordon (Margaret) of Chesterville,
Ralph (Barbara) of Osgoode, and Edie Beckstead of Ottawa.
She was predeceased by brother Egerton and Reg Barkley, and a
twin sister, Hilda McMartin-MacDermid.
She is also survived by sister-in-law Olive Barkley of Morrisburg.
She was loving grandmother of Todd Beckstead, Steven, Jeffrey
and Neil Smith. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews,
and Smith family sister and brothers-in-law.
Friends called at Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg
on March 14 and 15. The funeral was on March 15 with Rev. Sandy
Macpherson officiating. Interment was at Maple Ridge Cemetery
in Chesterville.
Pallbearers were Todd Beckstead, Steven Smith, Jeffrey Smith,
Robert Barkley, Brian Barkley and Bob Scott.
