Mahlon Strader
Mahlon Strader of Williamsburg passed away at Winchester
District Memorial Hospital on May 5, 2004 after a brief illness.
He was 94.
He is survived by his wife Norma (nee MacIntosh) and sister Audrey
(Bill) Casselman of Williamsburg. He is also survived by nieces
and nephews. He was predeceased by brother Lyell "Sib"
Strader and sisters Ruth Hogaboam and Doris Hill.
A lifetime resident of the area, he was born in the former Matilda
Township on Oct. 23, 1909 to Wilbert and Pearl (nee Robinson)
Strader. He attended Strader Hill School and Morrisburg Collegiate.
He earned his teaching certificate in Normal School in Ottawa.
He taught at several schools including Strader Hill, Oak Valley,
Rowena, Cass Bridge, Glen Becker, Johnstons Corners; and he was
principal at Williamsburg for three years.
He also farmed with his wife Norma, whom he married at Dundela
United Church Manse on July 29, 1941. They milked Jersey cows
and sent the milk to the dairy in Morrisburg to be made into ice
cream.
He had a great love of animals and when he and Norma travelled
with their camper they always had a dog or two along for the ride.
He also enjoyed gardening and he sold fruits and vegetables at
the roadside in front of his home west of Glen Becker each fall.
He was a member of the Morrisburg United Church.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg
on May 7 and the funeral was held at the funeral home on May 8
with Rev. Jean Udall officiating. Interment was at Spruce Haven
Cemetery in Brinston. The pallbearers were Alan Casselman, Shaler
Hill, Jack Hill, Lorne Johnston, Lee Johnston, and Martin Nicolaasen.
Honorary pallbearers were Harry Nicolaasen, Larry Casselman, and
Jeff Van Moorsel.
Donations to Winchester District Memorial Hospital would be appreciated
by the family.
