Maria Verhey-Dey
Maria Verhey-Dey passed away at
Winchester District Memorial Hospital on June 22, 2004 after a
brief illness. She was 91.
She is survived by her son Adri (Barbara) of Toyes Hill. She was
predeceased by her sister Sjaan Romein and her brother Pete Vanderschoor.
She was the loving grandmother of Shelley (Randy) Barwick of North
Carolina and Scott (Tanya) Verhey of Iroquois, and great-grandmother
of Presley, Braden and Nathen. She was a sister-in-law of Suus
(Teun) Molendyk of Rotterdam and dear aunt of Rier Rouwen of Rotterdam.
She was born and raised in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on June
22, 1913 to the late Adrian Vanderschoor and Maria (nee Lakerveld).
She married Rokus Verhey on June 10, 1936, and they lived in Rotterdam
until May 12, 1949, when they moved to Armstrong, B.C. The Verhey
family lived in Armstrong until 1962 when they purchased the farm
at Toyes Hill. After Rokus died in 1975, Maria remained in Toyes
Hill until 1979 when she moved to Hills Trailer Park. She married
Jim Dey on June 9, 1984 and they lived in the trailer park until
he died in 1988. After Jim's death Maria remained living in the
trailer park until January 14, 2003 when she moved to the Hartford
Retirement Centre. She was a resident of the Hartford Retirement
Centre in Morrisburg for one and half years.
Maria was a homemaker and seamstress and enjoyed sewing, playing
cards, and spending time with her family and friends. She will
be fondly remembered by David and Diana McKendry of Glen Becker
and their children Brandon and Kathleen.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg
on June 24. The funeral service was held at the funeral home on
June 25 with Rev. Yvonne Willis officiating. Interment was at
Spruce Haven Cemetery, Brinston.
The pallbearers were Dale Keyes, Cleland Sloan, David McKendry,
Dean Keyes, Brian Keyes and Bud Pollock.
