Donald Allen
On Thursday afternoon, Nov. 3, 2005, Donald Edwin Allen passed
away suddenly and unexpectedly at Allen Grove Farm in Mountain.
Born on Aug. 21, 1930, Don was the son of Merrill Allen (1980)
and Helena Beggs (1986). He was raised on Loughlin Ridge Road
and attended North Mountain Consolidated School.
Except for a few months in 1952 when he went on a fall excursion
to Yellow Grass, Sask., Don lived north of Hallville in Mountain
Township.
On February 12, 1955, he married Muriel Murdock at the Hallville
United Church Manse. Lot 6, Concession 11 was home until 1983
when the farm was sold to their oldest son Larry. Don never released
his ties from the farm and although he moved to 'the red brick
bungalow north of the pines', the farm was always home to him.
Being a dairy farmer, Holstein cattle were his priority. A proud
achievement in his life was in April 1984 when he received the
Master Breeders' Shield - the top honor award presented by the
Holstein Association of Canada. In October 1988, Don received
the 30-year Veteran Breeder Pin from the Dundas County Holstein
Club. For over 40 years, he served as a trustee on the Reid's
Mills United Church Cemetery Board.
He was content with the country way of living - helping on the
farm and visiting with whomever had the time, (whether he knew
them or not), were high on his list of priorities.
Don is survived by his wife Muriel, sons Larry of Mountain, Kevin
(Patricia McLaren) of Mountain and his daughter Susan (Rick Fisher)
of Perth. He was predeceased by his son Dwayne on June 1, 2005.
He was the proud grandfather and 'Don' to Michael and Christopher
Allen of Mountain and to Lucas and Nicholas Fisher of Perth.
He was the brother of Margaret, Marion and Mervin, and was predeceased
by his brothers Douglas in 1987 and Gordon in 1995. Don was the
son-in-law of Clark Murdock and the late Selma Davis (1978). He
was brother-in-law of Mel, the late Harold (2003), the late Nancy
(1952) and Dixie, and was uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He will be missed.
The funeral service, held at the Grant Brown Funeral Home on Nov.
7, 2005, was officiated by Rev. Blair Paterson, who once again
was able to help the family and friends through his understanding
and words of wisdom. Interment followed at Reid's Mills United
Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his two sons Larry and Kevin, and his grandsons
Michael and Christopher Allen and Lucas and Nicholas Fisher.
We hold you close within our hearts
And there you will remain,
To walk with us throughout our lives
Until we meet again.
