John Burton 'Jack' Smith
John B. (Jack) Smith passed away
peacefully at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital on July
21, 2005. He was born to Angus and Vera Smith in April of 1933.
Jack was a life long resident of Chesterville and will be greatly
missed by all who knew him. The many visitors, flowers, donations
and cards are a tribute to the wonderful husband, father and grandfather
that we loved so much.
Jack enjoyed a lengthy career that included positions with Roads
Resurfacing in Chesterville, Eastern Breeders and a two-year term
at Steinberg Motor Sales. Following this time frame he returned
to road construction with the Three United Counties, leading him
to the position of Road Foreman in the Winchester Springs Division.
Throughout the last ten years of his career (1983-1993), before
his retirement, he was Public Works Supervisor for the Village
of Chesterville. There were many highlights throughout Jack's
career, the most important being all of the people he met along
the way - many of whom remained friends long past the term of
his employment. Jack enjoyed the last eleven winters of his life
in St. Petersburg, FL.
He was predeceased by his parents and will be lovingly remembered
by his wife Lois of 49 years. He will be sadly missed by his son
Kevin (Kathy Ziebell) of Pickering, and his daughter Lorraine
Giesbrecht (Peter) of Kemptville. Cherished grandfather of Brad
and Jenna Smith, and Meghan and Logan Giesbrecht. He is also survived
by his brothers Carl (Muriel), Bill (Bev), and Lyle (Sandra),
all of Chesterville, and his sisters June McDermid (Lyal) of Berwick,
Ann McMillan (Rony), Erva Droppo (the late Murray), and Jean Byers
(the late Stuart), all of Chesterville, as well as numerous nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted by Mary Lou Shortill at Trinity
United Church in Chesterville on July 25, 2005. Eulogies were
given by his good friends Charlie Graham and Tom Lee, and by his
four grandchildren.
Acting pallbearers were his nephews, Stephen Droppo, Donnie McDermid,
Mark and Craig Smith, David Byers and Troy McMillan. Honorary
pallbearers were Gordon MacIntyre, Garry Smith, Bob Miltimore,
Neil MacMillan, Lyle Merkley and Garnet Droppo.
Interment follwed at Maple Ridge Cemetery.
