Garnet Barkley

Garnet "Sage" Barkley, a lifetime resident of the area, passed away at Dundas Manor Nursing Home in Winchester on Aug. 24, 2006. He was 79.
He was born on Oct. 3, 1927 in Williamsburg Township to the late Joseph Barkley and Effie Barkley (nee Gordier). Heis survived by his wife Audrey Barkley (nee Crites) whom he married on Oct. 3, 1954 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. He was the father of Gary (Laurie) Barkley of Williamsburg, Larry (Rhonda) Barkley of Ingleside, Sandra (Jim) Cumming of Winchester, and Tracy (Lyndon) Johnston of Williamsburg. He will be fondly remembered by 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a son Calvin, a grandson Michael, brothers Orlin Barkley, Hank Barkley, Glen Barkley, Silas Beckstead, Fred Link, and sisters Ella Mae Whitteker, Viola Noble, and Agnes Beckstead.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, and the Williamsburg Fire Department for over 28 years. He worked as a truck driver for Dwain Hess Transport for 28 years. In 1976 he went to work as a teamster at Upper Canada Village where he remained until he retired in 1992. Following his retirement he trucked milk from St. Albert to Upper Canada Village forthree years. He also served as caretaker of the cemeteries in Williamsburg and Boucks Hill for over 20 years.
His hobbies included showing horses with Lyle Baker at local fairs, and working on the farm with his son Larry. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Friends called at Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Aug. 27. The funeral was held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Williamsburg on Aug. 28 with Rev. Noreen Gullons officiating, followed by interment at New Union Cemetery in Williamsburg.
The pallbearers were Allan Brunt, Brian Whitteker, Dale Casselman, Brian VanHoof, Andy Buter, and Victor Brooks. The honourary pallbearers were Kevin Allen, Buster Sneath, Dwain Hess, Glenn Whitteker, Harold Coughler, Lyle Gallinger, and Wayne Barkley.
Donations to Winchester District Memorial Hospital or St. Peter's Lutheran Church would be appreciated by the family.
