Benjamin 'Langton' Sweet Carr
Benjamin "Langton" Sweet Carr of
Morrisburg passed away peacefully after a brief illness on April
12, 2006 at Woodland Villa Nursing Home in Long Sault. He was
86.
He was born on April 9, 1920 in Winchester to the late Langton
Benjamin "Ben" Carr and the late Mabel Sweet. He was
the loving father of Judith Johnson of Bradford, NH, Peter of
Whitehorse, YK, David of Morrisburg, Charles, and Laurie, both
of Toronto. He was the dear grandfather of Amber, Amy, Changa
"Shawn", Ben, Julia, Naomi, Dylan, and great-grandfather
of Jeynaba and Sahjo. He is survived by his former spouse Elma
Youngs of Toronto. He is also survived by step-children, Christine
(Brian) Baldwin, Ricki (Elaine) Froats, and Gary (Connie) Froats;
step-grandchildren Stephanie, Dennis, Mark, Barry, and Wayne;
step-great-grandchildren, Randy, Kurt, Cole, Ethan, Brody, and
Brett; by sister-in-law Colleen Carr; nieces Janet (Brian) McKay,
and Linda (Richard) Brown. He was predeceased by his long time
companion Bea Froats, son John, brother John, and niece Debby
Carr.
His father "Ben" came from Commanda, near Parry Sound.
He was an engineer who came to this area in the early 1900s to
help with construction of Highway 31. He met Mabel Sweet, the
only daughter of Aaron and Mary Sweet, the owners of a successful
general store in Winchester. Aaron Sweet was also a one-time conservative
Member of Parliament for the region.
"Langton" received a bachelor degree at the University
of Guelph Agricultural College. He learned his manners from his
mother and they stood him in good stead his whole life. His love
and competence at all outdoor sports and recreations he got from
his father, and his politics from his grandfather. He was a retired
accounting clerk and worked for 24 years at CIL/Dupont.
Like many in Morrisburg, he loved the river, and it was a great
loss to him when he could no longer climb into a boat. He was
very happy living in his home "The Ship's Mate" and
hoped to die there as his mother had done. One sensed when he
left his home at the end of last year that he would not want to
live too long away from this beloved place. He died peacefully
in his sleep at Woodland Villa and the family are grateful for
the loving care he received while living there.
Friends were received at the Parker Funeral Home in Morrisburg
on April 18. The memorial service was held in the chapel of the
funeral home on April 19 with Rev. Jean Udall officiating. Inurnment
will be held at a later date.
