Hilda Fawcett
Oct. 12, 1919 - Jan. 27, 2006
Hilda Fawcett (nee Levere) was born on Oct. 12, 1919 at South
Gower Township. She was the daughter of Wilson J. Levere and Maude
D. (nee Hamilton).
In 1936 Hilda met her future husband Lorne Fawcett at a cake-and-strawberry-ice
cream social in Hainsville. They were married on Dec. 12, 1938
by Rev. E. Lacey at the United Church in Brinston. The couple
resided in Iroquois. During these years she became a housewife
and mother while Lorne was employed by Sam Johnson.
In 1946, the family moved to Brinston. There, Lorne was employed
by the C.P.R. Railroad. In 1948, the family settled in Hulbert.
Lorne was then employed by the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas
and Glengarry where he worked until he retired in 1970.
With her husband working, Hilda took care of their hobby farm,
milking cows, etcetera, and she raised geese and ducks to be sold,
all dressed, for Christmas and New Years. In the summer time,
the cellar shelves had to be filled. Lorne brought fruits and
vegetables, and in the fields Hilda picked wild strawberries with
her sister-in-law Vera Jackson. She made pickles, relishes, and
canned meats for the winter.
Hilda was a private person with a quiet personality. She enjoyed
reading and hockey. Her team was the Toronto Maple Leafs.
On May 17, 1994 Hilda sold her home at Dixon's Corners. She resided
in Spencerville at The Maples. In 1995 she took residence in the
Iroma in Iroquois. There she had the company of her sisters Mildred
and Dorothy. Four years later she moved to the Mayfield in Prescott
and was joined by her sisters. In 2000, still in excellent health
and active, she moved to the St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville.
Later during her stay there, her health and welfare began to change.
Her family then moved her to the Wellington House in Prescott.
She was given excellent and proper care and soon became her old
self.
She spent the last eight months of her life at the Golden Acres
in Brockville, where her memory faded due to dementia. On Fri.,
Jan. 27 Hilda Fawcett went to Heaven.
Hilda is survived by daughters, Marjorie Martelle (David), Barbara
Madden (William), and Vera Marchand (John); grandchildren, Cynthia
Hodder (Floyd), Ken Martelle, Brenda Larocque (Keith), Gloria
Beckstead (Sam), Sharon Riddel (Kevin), and Darlene Burton (Randy);
great-grandchildren, Kurtis Martelle, Brittiany and Daniel Hodder,
Noelle Larocque, Mikaela Beckstead, Bradley and Connor Burton,
and Isabell (Martelle) Whalen. She is also survived by her sister
Mildred Levere of Brockville, and by sister-in-law Leafphy (nee
Fawcett) McNeill of Prescott. She was predeceased by her husband
Lorne on April 17, 1978; her sisters Olive (late William Hall),
Eva (late Lawrence Jackson), and Dorothy (late Earl Fawcett);
and by her brother Howard Levere (late Fannie (nee Beckstead)).
Visitation took place at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home
in Iroquois on Jan. 29. The funeral was held on Jan. 30 with Rev.
Janet Evans officiating. There will be a spring interment at Spruce
Haven Cemetery in Brinston.
