Deodata (Dea) Vreede Lyall

Dea Lyall passed away peacefully and quickly at the Ottawa General Hospital on April 5, 2006. She was 82.
She was the loving mother of John of Bangalore, India, Philip (Shelley) of Mountain, Peter (Teddi) of Vancouver, BC, and Susan (Tom) of New York City, NY. She was the proud grandmother of Jeremy, Jessica, Lloyd, Austin and Eric, great-grandmother to Mae, and aunt to Ted Morris of New Orleans, LA.
She was born March 21, 1923 in Semarang, Indonesia and raised in Wassenaar, Holland.
The Second World War broke out during her senior school years, bringing many changes. Dea lost her brother Theo, who was serving in Indonesia. She joined the Dutch Red Cross, and at the close of the war, met her future husband Lloyd Lyall. They were married in Winnipeg in 1947, and moved to Ottawa. In 1955, they moved to Manotick. Dea had a strong sense of community involvement; she was a founding member of the Manotick Tennis Club in 1964, a volunteer at the Manotick Public Library for 47 years (recognized as the longest serving volunteer on record), a member of the Manotick Book Club for over 40 years and an active member of the Elizabeth Fry Society.
Dea and Lloyd were both avid gardeners, tending to many community gardens and their home garden on the Rideau, where they lived happily for 50 years. Dea was a compassionate, caring individual with a strong social conscience, and well loved by her many friends and family. Her kind and gentle ways touched all and will be deeply missed.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Pinecrest Reception Centre on April 15 from 2 to 4 pm.
