Beryl Bruce
Alice Beryl Bruce of Spencerville passed away
after a long illness at the Garden Street site of the Brockville
General Hospital on Jan. 15, 2007. She was 95.
She was born on Nov. 27, 1911 in Nepean Township to Edward Malcomson
and Alice Beryl Dawson. She was raised in Nepean Township and
moved to Spencerville as a teenage girl. She married Hugh Bruce
on Nov. 11, 1931 in Spencerville.
She was a homemaker most of her married life, a community volunteer,
and for a few years, she was employed as a cook at Featherstonhaugh
Nursing Home. She belonged to the United Church Women, the Women's
Institute, and other church organizations. She was a member of
the church choir for 40 years. She was president of the Spencerville
Agricultural Society in 1967.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Hugh (June 9, 1974).
She was the loving mother of Edward (Mary) of Spencerville, and
Shirley Martin (Ray) of Prescott. She was the dear sister of Jack
(Ruth), Denzil (Mary) Malcomson, and Gladys Coughtry. She was
the cherished grandmother of 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren,
and three great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by daughters-in-law
Mabel Bruce, Theresa Whiffin, and Frances Bruce, and numerous
nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sons
Melville, Douglas, and William; by brothers Orville, Aylwin, and
Donald; and by sisters Viola Wallace, Jennie Hunter, Lorna Grue,
and Beatrice Brownlee.
Visitation was held at Grant Brown Funeral Home Purcell Chapel
in Spencerville on Jan. 19. The funeral service was held at Spencerville
United Church on Jan. 20 with Rev. Michael Perreault officiating.
Joan Gibson was the organist. The pallbearers were grandsons David,
Donald and Mark Bruce, Richard Beaudoin, and great-grandsons Danny
Bruce, and Bruce Donnelly. A spring interment will be held at
Spencerville Union Cemetery.
