Ruby Evelyn Dawley
December 3, 1918 - November 18, 2007
Ruby Evelyn Dawley passed away peacefully on
Sun., Nov. 18, 2007 at the St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville. She
was 88.
She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Basil Dawley of
Winchester (2001), and by her youngest son, Glen of Blind River,
Ont (1983). She is survived by four children; Leslie (Helen) of
Kingston, Dwayne (Ruth) of Edmonton, Carole (Ferenc) Miklian of
Morrisburg, and Carman (Heather) of Calgary. She was the cherished
grandmother of 12: Jeffrey, Kevin, Janice, Lorinda, Steven, Tracey,
Nancy, David, Sarah, Mitchell, Christopher, and Tina, as well
as a loving great-grandmother to five. She was the dear sister
of Lola Cumming, Beulah Richdale, and Maynard Cinnamon.
She was born and raised in the Harmony area attending the Ormond
Public School. As a wartime bride, she accompanied her new husband
to Vancouver, BC and the Queen Charlotte Islands where Basil served
in the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War. In 1945 they returned
to Winchester and took over the Dawley family farm where they
raised five children.
Ruby and Basil operated a family farm and several businesses in
the Winchester area for many years. They were well known and respected
as purebred Holstein breeders, business entrepreneurs, sports
enthusiasts, and very active in both local and provincial politics.
Ruby supported her husband and her children in each and every
endeavour in which they participated. She was equally as comfortable
and capable milking cows, as she was baking pies in the kitchen.
After the passing of her husband, she spent five wonderful years
living in the Hartford Retirement Centre in Morrisburg, and for
a brief period in St. Lawrence Lodge.
She enjoyed many pastimes including, gardening, golfing, curling,
and playing cards. She was an avid sports fan and cheered on her
favourite teams, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Toronto Blue Jays
with fervour.
She will be forever remembered for her caring nature, her generous
spirit, her mischievous sense of humour, and her unwavering devotion
to her family.
The funeral service was held at the Winchester Funeral Home Chapel
on Sat., Nov. 24 and was followed by a reception in the Sunday
School Hall of the Winchester United Church. The pallbearers included
grandsons Jeffrey, Kevin and Stephen Dawley, David Miklian, and
nephews Brian and Dennis Cinnamon.
Our sincere thanks to Rev. Bob Williams who conducted the funeral
service, and to Tammy McRae, who provided the musical leadership.
Our appreciation is also extended to the UCW members who provided
the refreshments, and to all the staff at both the Hartford Retirement
Centre in Morrisburg and the St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville
for their loving care of our mother.
Donations to Winchester District Memorial Hospital or the Heart
and Stroke Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged.
