Helen Gilmer
Helen Gilmer (nee Fisher), a lifetime resident
of the area passed away following a brief illness at the Montfort
Hospital in Ottawa on Fri., Oct. 12, 2007. She was 82.
She was born Oct. 30, 1924 in Matilda Township to the late Harold
Fisher and the former Berdina Monroe. She was raised and educated
in Haddo until high school when she boarded in Iroquois during
the week so she could attend school, and went home on the weekends.
She married Percy Gilmer on June 30, 1948 and together they had
one son Larry.
She was a proud member of the Brinston United Church, the United
Church Women, and the Matilda Rebekah Lodge #342, Brinston, and
she was always there to help out at their many functions. She
was a talented musician and she entertained many people throughout
her lifetime playing the piano, organ, and harmonica. She was
an active lady who dearly loved, and who was dearly loved by,
her family and friends. Her pleasant demeanor and smile will be
fondly remembered by all those who had the pleasure of knowing
her.
She was predeceased by her husband Percy. She is survived by her
son Larry (Debbie) of South Mountain, and her grandchildren Timothy
(Becky), Matthew, Shawn, and Ashley. She was predeceased by her
sisters Dorothy Fisher and Ruby McMillan, and her brother Brock
Fisher. Aunt Helen will be lovingly remembered by many nieces
and nephews.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Iroquois
on Oct.15. The funeral service was held at Brinston United Church
on Oct. 16 with Rev. Yvonne Willis officiating, followed by interment
at Spruce Haven Cemetery in Brinston. The pallbearers were Timothy
Gilmer, Matthew Gilmer, Shawn Gilmer, Jim Adams, John McMillan,
and Harold McMillan. Lorne Strader was an honourary pallbearer.
Donations to the Brinston United Church would be gratefully acknowledged
by the family.
