Edith Riches

Edith Riches passed away peacefully at Winchester District Memorial Hospital Wed., June 6, 2007 after a nine month illness. She was 94.
She was born on March 14, 1913 in Essex, England to the late Walter Frost and the late Rose Helene Smith. She was the beloved wife of the late William Riches whom she married on Nov., 9, 1935 in England. She was the loving mother of Maureen (Wayne) LaPorte of Morrisburg. She was the dear grandmother of Michael (Robin) of Spencerville, Stephen (Fran) of Winchester, Ken (Julie) of Williamsburg, and Teresa (Greg) Waines of Ottawa. She was the caring great-grandmother of 10, and the cherished sister of Stanley Frost of Devon, England. She was predeceased by her siblings Dorothy Towler, Lily Hawkins, and Arthur Frost.
At an early age, she contracted polio, which left her with a slightly lame leg. This did not hamper her in any way, as she still enjoyed to play net-ball (known here as basketball). The war started, and her husband William worked long hours repairing and refitting ships to go overseas. She kept busy with their young daughter, and with her knitting and sewing. In April 1952 the family emigrated to Canada, making Victoria, B.C. their home. They travelled to England, Hawaii, and parts of the U.S. They later moved from B.C. to Winchester to be near Maureen and Wayne, and the extended family. She loved all of her family immensely, and wanted to be near them.
She was a housewife, and a member of St. James Anglican Church in Morrisburg. She moved to the Hartford Retirement Centre in Morrisburg in November 2005.
Friends paid their respects at the Parker Funeral Home in Morrisburg on June 11, followed by a memorial service in the chapel with Rev. Craig Bowers officiating. Inurnment was at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Chesterville.
