Douglas Gow
Douglas Gow, a lifetime resident of the Williamsburg
area, passed away at his son's home in Morrisburg on Fri., Feb.
27, 2009, following a lengthy battle with bladder cancer. He was
89.
He was born in Williamsburg Township on Oct. 14, 1919 to his parents
James and Lillie Gow (nee Black). When he was born, Doug weighed
less than a pound and was not given much chance of surviving,
but he proved to be a survivor, and eventually lived a long and
productive life.
On Oct. 26, 1939, he married Muriel Gow and together they had
two children Glenna and Dalton. When they were first married,
he worked on the farm, and then he got a job working for the Township
of Williamsburg. In April of 1956, he got a job at the Canadian
Tire store in Williamsburg where he worked for more than 28 years
until his retirement in October of 1984.
Following his retirement he became the cook and housekeeper because
Muriel was still working. He was an avid euchre player, He loved
to go out for Chinese dinners and he enjoyed dancing. His favourite
TV show was The Price is Right. He will be fondly remembered as
a quiet man who was extremely dedicated to his wife and family.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Muriel
Gow (nee Wells) and his children Glenna (Ray) Eldridge of St.
Catharines and Dalton (Nelda) Gow of Morrisburg. He was a loving
poppie to Debbie (John) Maheu, Cathy (Kevin) McCabe, Darryl (Sharon)
Gow, Denzil (Inga) Gow and great-grandpa to Tasha and Tanya Maheu,
Douglas and Julia McCabe, Steven and Samantha Gow, and Erika and
Rowan Gow. He was predeceased by sisters Maud McMillan, Blanch
Gallinger, Gladys Gow, brothers James, William, George, Mahlon,
Stanley, Duane, and an infant sister. He is survived by his brother-in-law
Donnie (Ellyn) Wells of RR#1 Williamsburg, and many nieces and
nephews.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg
on Mon., March 2 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, and Tues., March 3
from 10 am until time of service held at the funeral home with
Rev. Elaine Beattie officiating, followed by cremation. The pallbearers
were Douglas McCabe, Julia McCabe, Tasha Maheu, Tanya Maheu, Steven
Gow, Samantha Gow, Denzil Gow, and Darryl Gow. The honourary pallbearers
were Ed Hanson, Keith Shaver, and Carl Robinson.
Donations to Williamsburg United Church, Dundas County Hospice
or New Union Cemetery would be appreciated by the family.
