Nelda Grace Kerr
Nelda Kerr of Hallville passed away peacefully
at Dundas Manor on Mon., Aug., 30, 2010.
Nelda was born on May 29, 1923, the only daughter and youngest
child of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (nee Rigg) Crowder, in Mountain.
She had four older brothers.
Her parents owned a store in Mountain, and when she was eight
years old, they sold the store and moved to a farm in the Reids
Mills area. In 1941, she married Thomas Kerr, and they moved in
with his parents on the family farm at Hallville. Together, they
raised six children.
She was a hard worker, and could be found helping in the hay fields,
in the barn milking cows, and doing all kinds of farm chores.
She always had a large garden, and preserved and pickled many
fruits and vegetables for the family to enjoy during the long
winters. Nelda was a great cook, and could bake the very best
tea biscuits, breads, yummy cookies, and her Christmas cookies
were a real treat. She was a talented seamstress, making clothes
for herself and her family. She loved to crochet and knit, and
she made many beautiful quilts and tablecloths. Many of these
won her prizes at the local fairs, and craft shows. These talents
she learned from her adoring mother, she talked with great respect
and love for her Mom, who was taken away from her way too soon.
Even in her 80s she could be seen mowing the large lawn at the
farm, and tending to her flowers. She loved to travel, and made
many trips to Moose Jaw, SK., one trip to Florida, and many trips
throughout Ontario, and northern New York state. Her favourite
place was her brother Leonard's cottage on Papineau Lake.
Nelda is survived by her five sons: Earl (Betty) of Moose Jaw,
Clair, Willis (Terresa), Ronnie (Eleanor), and Garry, all of Hallville;
her only daughter Grace Stobo (the late Arnold) of Cardinal; nine
grandchildren; 14 great-grand-children; and her brothers Lorne
of Winchester and Lloyd of Kemptville. She will be dearly missed
by the Knitting family of Moose Jaw, Betty's sons, daughters,
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-granddaughter,
who affectionately called her Grandma Kerr. They were always happy
to see her when she came to visit Earl and Betty, they loved her
dearly, and she thought the world of them.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Kerr (1988), her brothers
Leonard and Milton; her son-in-law Arnold Stobo; her husband's
parents, Thomas and Margaret Kerr, who she referred to as Grampa
and Grama Kerr. They accepted her into their home and lives, and
loved her as a daughter, and she returned the love to them.
She was laid to rest beside her husband at Reids Mills Cemetery.
The pallbearers were her five sons, and grandson Dean Kerr.
The funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Byers Funeral Home
in South Mountain (613-989-3836).
Mom, you left a lot of memories, and we will miss you dearly.
You will live on in our hearts forever.
