Leola Shay
A resident of the Dundas Manor Nursing Home in Winchester for
the past three years, Leola Shay (nee Werley) passed away there
on Sun., May 16, 2010. She was 92.
Leola was born in North Lunenburg on Jan. 4, 1918 to her parents,
Elbern and Florence Werley (nee Coughler).
On Aug. 17, 1946 she married Edwin Shay, and together they had
two sons Murray and Reg. Leola was a hard worker, and she worked
alongside her husband Ed on the farm in addition to taking care
of the household chores. She was a devoted wife and mother, and
she enjoyed quilting, embroidery, gardening, and travelling locally
to visit with her family and friends.
Leola was an active member of the community where she served for
many years as a member of the Trinity United Church U.C.W. and
the Chesterville Women's Institute.
Leola is survived by her sons, Murray (Patricia) of RR #1 Iroquois,
and Reg (Dorothy) of RR #1 Chesterville, her sister Evelyn Hart
of Cornwall, and her grandchildren John and Jenna Shay. She was
predeceased by her husband Edwin, her brother Doug Werley, and
her daughter-in-law Gilda Shay (nee Casselman). She is also survived
by nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Chesterville
on Tues., May 18 and on Wed., May 19. The funeral service was
held in the funeral home on May 19 with Rev. Wendy Wright-MacKenzie
and Rev. John Werley officiating, followed by interment at Maple
Ridge Cemetery in Chesterville. The pallbearers were Barry Merkley,
Richard Hart, Claire Merkley, Tom Forward, John Maxwell, and Larry
Smith.
Donations to the Alzheimer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation
would be appreciated by the family.
