28-year drought over
WCC sweeps Broder Cup titles
WINCHESTER – It has been a long time, 28 years to be exact, since the Broder Cup has rested in the Winchester Curling Club’s (WCC) trophy case.
A Winchester rink last claimed the 64-year-old chalice — emblematic of ladies curling supremacy among teams from Morrisburg, Winchester, Russell and Metcalfe — in 1984.
This year’s competition, held in Morrisburg, where the impressive trophy was introduced by the Broder family in 1948, was significant in that Winchester teams pulled off a double takeout claiming both the “A” event and “B” event silverware.
Skip Janet LaPierre, third Janet Levere (a former Broder winner), second Janet Thompson and lead Rhonda Mark claimed the main trophy while skip Tina Asselin, third Mandy Peddle, second Diane Spurr and lead Joyce Ouellette captured the “B” side plaque.
Since introduced, the Broder has been won 25 times by teams representing the Metcalfe Curling Club. The title has gone to Russell in 19 different years, including 1948. Winchester teams have had their names engraved 11 times, while Morrisburg has registered nine victories.
Winchester’s run
The WCC’s first win was posted in 1961. There was a lull until 1968 when a three-year run up until 1970 was recorded. Another three-year reign was registered from 1975 through 1977. Winchester took the trophy in back-to-back years (1981 and 82) and then again in 1984.
Back in 2012
LaPierre opened this year’s event with a win over Russell’s Martha Stolk. She then advanced to the “A’ final knocking off Morrisburg’s Susan McIntosh. Winchester jumped into a 4-0 lead in the first end of the title match and went on to defeat Morrisburg’s Greta McGann registering the 11th victory for the WCC.
McGann made the final draw by defeating Metcalfe’s Sue Stacey and Russell’s Jill Miller.
Winchester’s other entry, skipped by Asselin, dropped its first match to Miller but qualified for the “B” final with a win over Stacey. Asselin then took “B” honors by beating Stolk.
